Also known as the Lemon-Scented Tea Tree, Leptospermum petersonii is an attractive, smaller tree with very fragrant, lemony leaves that is sometimes also used and pruned as an ornamental tree or shrub. Although both Lemon Tea Tree and Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) share part of the common name and are members of the Myrtaceae family, they have distinctly different aromatherapeutic properties. In addition, Lemon Tea Tree is not related at all to Lemon (Citrus limon). It has a more pleasing aroma than Tea Tree and is often used interchangeably, though the chemistry differs between the two plants.
Both Tea Tree and Lemon Tea Tree leaves were used by Australian aboriginal tribes for open wounds. Freshly crushed leaves were applied directly to the skin, and held in place with a mudpack. Lemon Tea Tree Oil was also used extensively by the Maori people of New Zealand for burns, infections and other skin irritations.
